The present invention relates to physiology and immunology based on iota-carrageenan for use as a medicament in the prophylactic or therapeutic treatment of allergic conditions or diseases, comprising administering to mucosal surfaces of the respiratory tract or the eyes in an anti-allergic effective amount, with the proviso that the iota-carrageenan comprises not more than 5% by weight of lambda-carrageenan. The present invention also relates to use of iota-carrageenan in the manufacture of a pharmaceutical composition for the prophylactic or therapeutic treatment of allergic conditions or diseases. Besides, the invention relates to an anti-allergic pharmaceutical composition, comprising an effective amount of the iota-carrageenan. The pharmaceutical composition is intended, in particular, for administering to mucosal surfaces of nose and eyes and can be preferably used in therapy of allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, food allergy, or allergic asthma. The present pharmaceutical composition can be used in the restoration or supplementation of impaired adsorption capacity of mucus. The technical effect provides a novel use of the iota-carrageenan in the prophylactic or therapeutic treatment of allergic conditions or diseases. |
