An operation method of a memory controller, according to an embodiment of the present invention, comprises the steps of: determining a data state according to an input stream including a plurality of alphabets; converting a part having a size corresponding to a transformation size of the input stream to the lower digits, if the data state is a first state among the plurality of predetermined data states; inserting one alphabet among the part converted into the input stream; and outputting the alphabet contained in the input stream as it is, if the data state is a second state among the plurality of predetermined data states. According to the memory controller and the operation method thereof, of the an embodiment of the present invention, data reliability can be improved by avoiding a forbidden data pattern which can cause data loss.
