The invention relates to a method for producing a piston (10) for an internal combustion engine, comprising a piston upper part (11) and a piston lower part (18), wherein the piston upper part (11) has a piston floor (12) having a combustion recess (13) having a dome (14), a circumferential fire land (15) and a circumferential ring section (16), wherein the piston bottom part (18) comprises piston bosses (19) provided with boss bores (21), said piston bosses being connected to one another via running surfaces (23, 24). According to the invention the method comprises the following steps: a) producing a blank (11', 111', 211') of the piston upper part (11) by means of a forming method, b) producing a blank of the piston lower part (18) by means of a forming method or a casting method, c) connecting the blanks of piston upper part (11) and piston lower part (18) by a welding method to form a piston body, d) secondary machining and/or finish-machining the piston body to form a finished piston (10). According to the invention, in step a) during the production of the blank of the piston upper part (11), the contour of the combustion recess (13) away from a domed region (14', 114', 214') is completed, surplus material (25, 125, 225) is formed in the domed region (14', 114', 214') of the combustion recess (13) and in step d) the surplus material (24, 125, 225) in the domed region (14', 114', 214') of the combustion recess (13) is removed in an amount such that a predetermined volume of the combustion recess (13) results. |
