Disclosed is a method of controlling a fuel supply system 100 of an engine 10 in which an engine driven high pressure fuel pump 130 is operated to provide either an optimum demand level providing optimum pump efficiency for the current engine speed or at a zero demand level unless a fuel accumulator 140 empty and the current fuel demand exceeds the maximum quantity of fuel that can be provided by the high pressure fuel pump.
