PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a subject information acquisition device by which a photoacoustic signal that is generated in a subject with a high degree of precision.SOLUTION: A subject information acquisition device includes: a light irradiation part 106 for irradiating light to a subject 101 that can change the emission direction of the light; a scanning mechanism 107 for moving the light irradiation part 106 along a first axis; a probe 113 for receiving an acoustic wave generated due to the light irradiated to the subject 101; a processing part 115 for generating characteristic information of the subject 101 from the acoustic wave received by the probe 113; and a control part 109 for controlling the position of the light irradiation part 106 on the first axis and the emission direction of the light emitted from the light irradiation part 106. The control part 109 determines the emission direction of the light emitted from the light irradiation part 106 based on the position of the light irradiation part 106 on the first axis.
