Methods and systems are provided such that users, servers, and applications may utilize an extensible data filtering model where data is organized into a tree with filtering available at any node level. Accordingly, the node filtering and propagation method and system allows for the efficient management and automatic replication of common information for multiple applications at all data levels.

1. A method, comprising:
receiving a query from a communication device, the query defining at least one filter criterion to be applied to a data structure that comprises at least two nodes, a first of the at least two nodes being a parent node and a second of the at least two nodes being a child node of the parent node; applying the at least one filter criterion to the data structure, wherein applying the at least one filter criterion comprises searching both the first and second nodes for an entry that satisfies the at least one filter criterion; applying the query to a third node, wherein creation of the third node is subsequent to the query definition; creating one or more filter results, the filter results corresponding to one or more entries that satisfied the at least one filter criterion from the first and second nodes; and generating a notification, the notification including a definition of the one or more filter results and causing any change to the one or more entries to be provided to at least one of the communication device and a second device that has a subscription associated with the generated notification.
