Disclosed are an apparatus and a method for diagnosing an electric contactor. The apparatus for diagnosing an electric contactor according to the present invention provides an apparatus for diagnosing a failure of the electric contactor connecting a battery and a load, and includes: a diagnosis resistor which is connected between the electric contactor and an electrode terminal of a battery which is not connected to the electric contactor, among an anode terminal or a cathode terminal of the battery; an optocoupler connected to the diagnosis resistor; a resistor voltage measurement part for measuring voltage applied to the diagnosis resistor respectively; and a diagnosis control part which outputs a control signal to the electric contactor and the optocoupler, and determines whether there is a failure of the electric contactor by using the voltage applied to the diagnosis resistor. According to the present invention, a user can determine a failure of an electric contactor through simple circuit configuration. Also, the diagnosis apparatus can be electrically insulated from a high voltage battery because the diagnosis apparatus is controlled by using an optocoupler. Therefore, electric shock or influence of electromagnetic waves due to a high voltage battery can be reduced and thus failure of the diagnosis apparatus can be prevented.
