<p>The present technique relates to a semiconductor device and a method of operating the same. A semiconductor device according to the present technique includes a first electrode; a second electrode which is separated from the first electrode; a variable resistance element which is interposed between the first electrode and the second electrode; and a conductor which is arranged on at least one of one side or the other side of the variable resistance element and is separated from the variable resistance element to apply an electric field. According to the present technique, a current is supplied from the variable resistance element to a local region by applying an electric field to the variable resistance element through a conductor adjacent to a variable resistance element, thereby reducing the switching current of the variable resistance element.</p>
