PURPOSE: A safety device of an R-MDPS(Rack type Motor Driven Power Steering) system and an operation method thereof are provided to prevent a belt protrusion from being damaged and prevent the handle from being locked by informing an operator about the generation of a slip on a belt transferring driving power of a motor to a rack bar in the R-MDPS system. CONSTITUTION: A safety device of an R-MDPS system comprises a storage unit(10), a motor RPM(Revolution Per Minute) measuring unit(20), a driver torque measuring unit(30), an ECU(Electronic Control Units)(40), and a display unit(50). The storage unit stores a standard table in which a standard RPM is recorded corresponding to a driving torque. The motor RPM measuring unit measures the RPM of a motor in the R-MDPS system. The driver toque measuring unit measures the driver torque generated by rotation of a steering handle due to the operation of a driver. The control unit determines the slip generation based on the standard stored in the storage unit. The display unit displays a warning light or a warning screen according to the control of the control unit.
