A coating composition comprising: an aqueous dispersion comprising: the melt-kneading product of (A) from 60 to 95 wt %, based upon the total weight of (A) and (B), of a base polymer which comprises one or more thermoplastic polymers;(B) from 5 to 40 wt %, based upon the total weight of (A) and (B), a stabilizing agent which comprises at least one component selected from the group consisting of ethylene-acrylic acid copolymers, ethylene-methacrylic acid copolymer, maleic anhydride grafted polyolefins, and combinations thereof;(C) a neutralizing agent; and(D) water;wherein the aqueous dispersion has a volume average particle size of less than about 5 μm;wherein a biaxially oriented polypropylene film having a coating layer derived from the application of the aqueous dispersion at a rate of from 1 to 2 grams per square meter has two or more of the following properties: (a) a heat seal strength of greater than or equal to 0.6 N/15 mm at a sealing temperature from 60 to 70° C.; (b) blocking resistance up to at least 40° C.; and (c) a broader hot tack than observed for the biaxially oriented polypropylene film in the absence of the coating layer.
