<p>Provided is a method for producing a hydroxyalkyl cellulose, which is a method for producing, easily and at low cost, a hydroxyalkyl cellulose having excellent transparency and capable of providing a highly viscous aqueous solution and comprises the following first step and second step: (1) a first step of mixing components including cellulose, a hydrophilic organic solvent, an alkali metal hydroxide, and water, thereby preparing a slurry containing an alkali cellulose, in which the amount of water in the slurry is set to 10 to 80 parts by weight relative to 100 parts by weight of a-cellulose contained in the cellulose, and the amount of the alkali metal hydroxide in the slurry is set to 0.7 to 1.4 moles per glucose unit of a-cellulose contained in the cellulose; and (2) a second step of reacting the alkali cellulose with an alkylene oxide, thereby obtaining a hydroxyalkyl cellulose, in which the amount of water in the alkali cellulose slurry obtained in the first step is set to 90 to 170 parts by weight relative to 100 parts by weight of a-cellulose contained in the cellulose used in the first step.</p> |
