A solid Fischer Tropsch synthesis catalyst which contains an active hydrogenating constituent and is contaminated with waxy and oily deposits is purified by first subjecting it to hydrogen-containing gas so as to cause destructive hydrogenation or at least part of the said deposits and subsequently removing the so treated deposits with a solvent. The purification may be applied to any solid catalyst in both fluidized and fixed bed operation. The catalysts may be the metals of the iron group, for example cobalt activated with thoria and deposited on a carrier of kieselguhr, whilst the solvent may be a light naphtha oil. The reactivation temperatures given are 360 DEG -500 DEG F. for cobalt and 450 DEG -750 DEG F. for iron. |
