A filler composition consisting essentially of water, a clay selected from the group consisting of talc, hydrotalcite, kaolin, calcinated clay, bentonite and mixtures thereof, and an anionic cellulose derivative containing one or more carboxymethyl groups and having a degree of substitution of carboxymethyl groups from about 0.15 up to about 0.40, and said filler composition has a cellulose derivative content from 0.3 to 10% by weight, based on the weight of the solids of the filler.
