<p>A composite rotor 10 for a double stator axial flux motor includes a holding means 15 for a plurality of permanent magnets 40 circumferentially spaced around the rotor 10, each of said permanent magnets 40 lying within said outer diameter of said rotor 10; and an over-winding of strands (50 fig 10 not shown) of reinforcement material toroidally wound over said holding means 15 and said magnets 40. The strands 50 help strengthen the rotor 10 and reduce weight and may be reinforced by resin encapsulation. Alternatively in a double rotor machine the rotor may comprise a boss ring 20 and an electrical steel strip wound annular ring 30 carrying surface mounted magnets 40 with the subsequent toroidally reinforcement. A non-magnetic/non-conductive inlay mask (120 fig 5 not shown) may be employed to locate the magnets and may be removed prior to reinforcing or may be retained, terminating flush with the magnet outer surface to reduce windage/turbulence. The over-winding may be a uniaxial fibre of glass, carbon, aramid or molecularly spun polyethylene or alternatively lightly woven fibres or fibre mixtures. The windings may be evenly wound or may be grouped to form reinforcing ridges between the magnets.</p> |
