6-Methylol-3-pentadecylphenol (prepared by condensing 3-pentadecylphenol in aqueous or aqueous alcoholic alkaline solution with a substantially equimolecular proportion of formaldehyde) is resinifiable by heat, and may serve, together with fillers, as a basis for moulding compositions, and, when resinified, as the binding or frictional material in friction elements.ALSO:6 - Methylol - 3 - pentadecylphenol is manufactured by condensing 3-pentadecylphenol in aqueous or aqueous alcoholic alkaline solution with a substantially equimolecular proportion of formaldehyde. In an example, the condensation is effected in an aqueous-methanolic solution of sodium hydroxide. Methoxyterephthalic acid is manufactured by methylating 6-methylol-3-pentadecylphenol and oxidizing the resulting 6-methylol-3-pentadecylanisole, e.g. with potassium permanganate.
