Provided is a backlight whereby it is possible to provide a backlight at reduced cost and that is thinner and smaller in size. A liquid crystal display device comprises a liquid crystal display panel (10). A backlight (14) comprises a light emitting diode (16), a substrate (18) on which the light emitting diode (16) is mounted, and a reflecting sheet (20), which is laminated around the light emitting diode (16) onto the surface of the substrate (18) on which the light emitting diode (16) is mounted. The surface of the substrate (18) on which the light emitting diode (16) is mounted faces the rear surface of the liquid crystal display panel (10). The substrate (18) and the liquid crystal display panel (10) have a more elongated shape in the width in a first direction (D1) which is common to both, than in the width in a second direction (D2) which is perpendicular to the first direction (D1). The substrate (18) is shorter in the width in a second direction (D2) than the width in a second direction (D2) of the liquid crystal panel (10), is placed so as not to face both end parts of the liquid crystal panel in the second direction (D2), and is facing the center part between both end parts of the liquid crystal panel (10). |
