[Class 8(ii)] In a filter in which incoming gas impinges on an oil surface e in a bath, entrains oil and deposits it on ar element 5 on flowing through, rendering the element 5 sticky to clean the gas, the oil draining then back into the bath, a baffle 2 is provided normally dipping into the oil and having near to and parallel with its lower edge one or more rows of openings 4, 6 or the highest row 4 being always above the oil level to function as flow commences and the others 6 if present becoming exposed in succession as the oil level falls due to increase in flow speed. The plate 2 may be cranked between the rows so that the latter are in different places, the upper edges of two adjacent rows then being in the relationship of two baffle plates. A shorter baffle 7 is arranged opposite the upper part of the element 5 to spread the stream evenly thereon and a central axial conduit 9 provided with apertures in its wall to facilitate flow evenly from the element 5.
