The purpose of the present invention is to provide an orally administered adsorbent capable of adsorbing large quantities of tryptophan or indoxyl sulfate in the presence of bile acid. Accordingly, an orally administered adsorbent is characterized by including spherical active carbon which has: a bulk density of 0.30-0.46 g/mL; a specific surface area obtained using the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method of at least 2000 m2/g; a total acid group content of less than 0.30 meq/g; a volume of pores having diameters in the range 20-10000 nm of not more than 0.21 mL/g; and a micropore volume ratio (Vm) of at least 1.0, said micropore volume ratio (Vm) being obtained using formula (1), namely Vm = (V2.0-V1.1)/(V1.1-V0.64) (in formula (1), V2.0, V1.1, and V0.64 are the cumulative volumes of pores having diameters of not more than 2.0 nm, not more than 1.1 nm, and not more than 0.64 nm, respectively, said volumes being calculated from nitrogen adsorption amounts using the Saito-Foley (SF) method). |
