The method involves adjusting light transmittance by creation of an electric voltage by a switching position (16), where the light transmittance is caused as a function of by occupants (10) of a motor vehicle. Operation of a window pane (14) to be detected by a detection unit (20) i.e. finger recognition unit, is adjustable. A predeterminable gesture of an occupant (10) is contactlessly detected with respect to the window pane by utilizing the detecting unit. Fingers (30, 32, 34, 36) of a hand (24) of the occupant are held ahead of the occupant. An independent claim is also included for a motor vehicle.
