Concentrated products suitable for immediate use as washing, degreasing, wetting and emulsifying agents are produced from less concentrated aqueous solutions of secondary sulphuric acid ester salts containing at least six carbon atoms by treating the initial solution with a water-soluble salt and a small proportion (not more than 10 per cent) of an organic solvent which is insoluble or substantially insoluble in the salt solution and contains one or more polar groups, or of a mixture of such solvents and separating the two layers into which the mixture forms. Preferably, the solvent is one which boils above 100 DEG C. and enhances the capillary-active effect of the product and the process is carried out at elevated temperature, the preferred temperature range being 50-100 DEG C. Suitable solvents mentioned are the aliphatic and cyclic alcohols boiling above 100 DEG C., e.g. cyclohexanol or methyl isobutyl carbinol, ketones, aldehydes and amines and suitable salts are common salt, sodium sulphate, sodium nitrate and the corresponding potassium salts. In an example, a technical ester salt solution, prepared from a sulphation product of a C10-C18 alkene fraction, was treated with common salt and cyclohexanol. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the concentration of salts of other sulphuric esters and of sulphonic acids, e.g. sulpho-chlorination products of hydrocarbons, alkylated aromatic sulphonic acids and sulphuric esters of alcohols and of the products obtained by oxo synthesis. In an example, a solution of a sulphonate obtained by sulphochlorination of a gas oil is concentrated. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
