A method and an apparatus for generating a depth map are disclosed. The method for generating a depth map comprises the steps of: matching a three-dimensional (3D) template model with a 2D object, based on an error function, with respect to a plurality of key frames; predicting the depth information of the 2D object, based on the matched 3D template model; splitting the 2D object into a plurality of color segments, and generating a depth map, based on the split color segments and the depth information of the 2D object. Therefore, a visual distortion of a displayed 3D image can be reduced.
