The system (1) has a sawing device (4) i.e. circular saw blade, movably mounted along a sawing channel (5) linearly extending in a machine table (3). A feed device transports a workpiece (2) on the machine table along feed direction. A control device (8) controls the sawing device and the feed device. A length measuring device determines length of the workpiece resting on the table along the feed direction and delivers the value of determined length to the control device. The control-, sawing- and feed devices are controlled for forming a trimming section depending on the length. An independent claim is also included for a method for trimming a plate or block-shaped workpiece.
