The present invention relates to a method for manufacturing hard carbon for a lithium secondary battery having high capacity, high efficiency and improved initial efficiency using high-density biomass, and hard carbon for a lithium secondary battery manufactured thereby. The method for manufacturing hard carbon for a lithium secondary battery according to the present invention comprises the steps of: making charcoal from tropical plants that are high-density biomass; pulverizing the charcoal of the tropical plants; treating the pulverized charcoal materials with acid; thermally treating the charcoal materials that have been treated with acid in an atmosphere of an inert gas; modifying a surface of the thermally treated charcoal materials via PC coating; and thermally treating the charcoal materials, the surface of which has been modified, in a vacuum atmosphere.
