PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a negative electrode material for an alkali metal ion battery that has a large average layer surface space of a (002)-plane compared with a graphite material, and is excellent in preservation characteristics and charge/discharge capacity.SOLUTION: A negative electrode material is a carbonaceous negative electrode material 100 used for an alkali metal ion battery. An average layer surface space dof a (002)-plane calculated by the X-ray diffraction method using a CuKα ray as a radiation source is 0.340 nm or more. The negative electrode material 100 is embedded with an epoxy resin, and the epoxy resin is hardened, and then, the obtained hardened material is cut and polished to expose a cross section. Next, at bright-field observation of the cross section using an optical microscope at a magnification of 1000, a first region 101 and a second region 103 having different reflective indexes are observed at the cross section. |
