PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an encoder and a pattern detecting method of the same, which can detect a malfunction adequately even when rotational frequency of a code disk becomes high. ! SOLUTION: An encoder includes a rotating part having a pattern and rotating about a rotating shaft, a first pattern detection section for detecting a pattern, a second pattern detection section for detecting a pattern separately from the first pattern detection section, and a control section for detecting the presence or absence of detection abnormality in the first pattern detection section or the second pattern detection section. !
