A surgical instrument for illuminating a surgical field comprises a generally cylindrical optical waveguide having a proximal end, a distal end, a bore, and a plurality of microstructures, wherein the bore extends from the proximal end to the distal end, and wherein the bore is sized to accommodate one or more instruments or tools, and wherein the optical waveguide conducts light from the proximal end to the distal end, and wherein the plurality of microstructures are disposed on an illumination surface of the optical waveguide, the microstructures configured to direct the light in a desired direction. |
