A turbocharger wastegate valve comprising a valve seat 6c, defining a plane VP which is non-orthogonal to the axis FA of a bypass 6, and a valve 8 pivotable from a closed position to an open position in which it directs gases exiting the bypass onto a leading face MLF of a catalytic converter 5a. The valve may be pivotable between an angle of 30 and 70 degrees to the axis of the bypass. The valve seat may be provided on a distal end of the bypass, wherein the valve pivots towards the centre of a chamber 13 into which the bypass protrudes. The gases may exit the bypass at an incline with respect to the flow of gases along the chamber. Also claimed is an exhaust system and a method of heating a catalytic converter. The valve is opened during an early phase of the engine cycle so as to heat the catalyst towards its optimum or light-off temperature. |
