Partial oxidation of organic compounds by reaction with oxygen, particularly the production of ethylene oxide from ethylene is carried out in the presence of a fluidized catalyst comprising silver and an oxide of copper and/or zinc and optionally barium peroxide, deposited on a finely-divided inactive support such as alumina for each 100 parts of which 10-70 parts by weight of silver, 0.1-2.0 parts of copper or zinc oxide and 3-10 parts of barium peroxide are preferred. 8-20 parts by volume of air per part of ethylene are employed at a reaction temperature between 200-350 DEG C., particularly 230-320 DEG C., the reaction time being about 0.5-2.5 seconds. In an example an air/ethylene mixture of volume ratio of 10 is passed upwardly at 238 DEG C. through a catalyst containing 26 parts of metallic silver, 0.3 parts cupric oxide and 4.5 parts barium peroxide per 100 parts of alumina. Ethylene oxide is separated from the exit gases and unreacted ethylene recycled.ALSO:A catalyst for the partial oxidation of organic compounds with air employing the fluidized technique, particularly the production of ethylene oxide from ethylene and air, comprises metallic silver, copper or zinc oxides and optionally barium peroxide deposited on an inactive support, and is prepared by adding an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide to an aqueous solution of the nitrates or acetates of silver and copper and/or zinc to precipitate the oxide and hydroxides which are combined with the support, such as inactive alumina, barium peroxide being optionally added. The composite is screened and heated to 260 DEG C. in air to decompose the silver oxide to metallic silver. Alternatively silver oxide may be precipitated alone and added to the copper, zinc and barium oxides mixed with the support. For each 100 parts of alumina, 10-70 parts by weight of silver, 0.1-2.0 parts of copper or zinc oxides and 3-10 parts of barium peroxide are preferably present in the final catalyst. |
