Synthetic resins are stabilized by the addition of not more than 10 per cent by weight of a chelate compound of copper or nickel with an aromatic o-hydroxy azo compound. Specified resins are polystyrene, polythene, polyvinyl chloride and linear superpolyamides. The stabilizers contain the group where M is copper or nickel and in which the aryl groups may be substituted, for example, with alkyl or aryl groups or with -OH, -OR, -NR2 or -COOR groups, where R is an alkyl or aryl group, or may be fused with one or more further aryl rings. Copper and nickel bis-(benzene azo-p-cresol) and bis-(benzene azo-b -naphthol) are mentioned. The compounds may be mixed on mills or by addition to a solution or suspension of the resin with subsequent removal of the liquid medium. The stabilizer may also be added during the production of the resin. Usual additives may be incorporated in the compositions which are particularly useful in the production of pipes, tubes, electrical insulation, films, coatings, fibres, &c.ALSO:Chelate compounds of copper or nickel with aromatic o-hydroxy azo compounds are prepared by mixing the azo compound with a base or salt of the metal, e.g. the sulphate, in the presence of dilute alkali. Specified compounds are those formed with benzene azo-p-cresol and benzene azo-b -naphthol. The complexes contain the group where M is copper or nickel and in which the aryl rings may be substituted with alkyl or aryl groups, or with -OH, OR, NR2 or COOR groups where R is an alkyl or aryl group, or may be fused with one or more further aryl rings.
