Laser welding machine has an optical system (5) which produces an annular laser beam (3"). This comprises a collimator (8), axicon (9), lens system (14) and conical mirror (15). An independent claim is included for a laser welding method using the machine. An optical guide is used to feed the beam to the optical system. The process is monitored using a camera (24), to which part (20') of the beam is deflected.
