Alkyl dinaphthyl phosphates of the formula R1O-PO(OR2)2, where R2 is naphthyl and R1 is either alkyl with 6-18 carbon atoms or b -alkoxyethyl where the alkyl residue has 4-18 carbon atoms, are used as plasticizers, fireretardants and extenders for synthetic resinous compositions, e.g. polyvinyl chloride and vinyl chloride copolymers such as those with vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride, diethyl maleate, diethyl fumarate and methyl methacrylate. A particular copolymer is that containing 95-85 per cent of vinyl chloride and 5-15 per cent of vinyl acetate.ALSO:The invention comprises monoalkyl dinaphthyl phosphates of the formula R1-O-PO(OR2)2, where R2 is naphthyl and R1 is either an alkyl group of 6-18 (preferably 8) carbon atoms terminating on a methylene group or a b -alkoxyethyl group in which the alkyl group has 4-18 carbon atoms. These are prepared by treating 1 mol. of the appropriate primary alcohol or alkoxyethanol with 1 mol. of phosphorus oxychloride and reacting the product with 2 mols. of alkali metal naphtholate. The naphthyl radical may be a or b . In the examples, phosphates are prepared where R1 is 6-methylheptyl, 2-methylpentyl, 2-ethylhexyl, trimethylhexyl, 2-propylheptyl, dodecyl, tridecyl, tetradecyl, hexadecyl, octadecyl (the last five derived from olefine polymers), butoxyethyl, n-hexoxyethyl, 2-ethylhexoxyethyl, trimethyl-hexoxyethyl, n-dodecoxyethyl, tridecoxyethyl, tetradecoxyethyl (the last two derived from olefine polymers), n-hexadecoxyethyl and n-octadecoxyethyl.ALSO:Alkyl dinaphthyl phosphates of the formula R1O-PO(OR2)2, where R2 is naphthyl and R1 is either alkyl with 6-18 carbon atoms or b - alkoxyethyl where the alkyl residue has 4-18 carbon atoms, are used in high-temperature and extreme pressure lubricants as fire-retardants and viscosity index improves. They may be mixed with other lubricants such as other phosphate esters and hydrocarbon oils, and other additives may be present, e.g. pour point depressants, detergents, corrosion inhibitors and stabilizers. A composition of 6-methylheptyl di-a-naphthyl phosphate and tricresyl phosphate is mentioned. |
