PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading device and an image forming apparatus capable of making a change in image inconspicuous at a rear end of a read image with a simple configuration.SOLUTION: An image reading device includes a step member 120 which has a document guide surface (document guide member) at a position separated from a transmitting glass surface by a predetermined distance, on the upstream side in a document conveyance direction with respect to a reading position where an image of a conveyed document is read by a reading unit such as a first surface fixed reading unit 151 through transmitting glass such as first contact glass 154. The step member 120 forms steps between the document guide surface and the transmitting glass and includes a projection part that projects toward the downstream side in the document conveyance direction from the document guide member, so as to form a space between the document guide member and the transmitting glass on the downstream side in the conveyance direction of the step member 120.
