A negative electrode (20) for nonaqueous electrolyte secondary batteries according to one embodiment of the present invention is obtained by forming a negative electrode mixture layer (22), which comprises a binder and negative electrode active material particles that can be alloyed with lithium, on a collector. The negative electrode mixture layer (22) comprises a base portion (22a) that is in the vicinity of the collector and a column portion (22b) that is formed on the base portion (22a). A negative electrode (20) for nonaqueous electrolyte secondary batteries according to another embodiment of the present invention is obtained by forming a negative electrode mixture layer (22), which comprises a binder and negative electrode active material particles that can be alloyed with lithium, on a collector. The negative electrode mixture layer (22) comprises a column portion (22b), and the particle diameters of the negative electrode active material particles are not more than 20% of the maximum diameter of the column portion (22b).
