Some embodiments include a method for measuring a total protein concentration within a sample. A sample may be incubated with at least one active ingredient for a time. The active ingredient can function as an electron donor or acceptor and can bind one or more proteins within the sample. The change may be measured of an electrochemical state of the analyte solution caused by binding the at least one active ingredient to protein using at least one sensor. An enzyme and a substrate may be added to the analyte solution and the mixture incubated in the presence of at least one sensor. An electrochemical state of the analyte solution may be measured using the at least one sensor to determine the total protein concentration. Also an oxidizing or reducing agent may be added to the analyte solution with the active ingredient, changing the electrochemical state of the analyte solution.
