METHODS FOR ENCODING/DECODING HIGH DEFINITION IMAGE AND APPARATUSES FOR PERFORMING THE SAME

According to a method for encoding/decoding a high definition image and an apparatus for performing the same, the size of a prediction unit for encoding is set to the size of an expanded macro block according to a temporal frequency characteristic or a spatial frequency characteristic in at least one picture for encoding. Movement prediction and movement compensation are performed in units of the set prediction unit size, and a conversion is performed. Also, after dividing a macro block having a size of 32X32 pixels or 64X64 pixels into at least one partition based on an edge, encoding is performed for each divided partition. Therefore, encoding efficiency of a high definition image having high definition (HD) level or higher can be improved.
