A device and a method for automatically controlling power supply in a portable electronic device are provided to prevent damage of a hard disk or data stored in the hard disk when the portable electronic device is turned off during booting owing a low power state of a battery by cutting off power supply to prevent booting even if a power-on signal is received in a low battery power state. A battery voltage detector(120) detects a voltage level applied to both terminals of a battery(100). A switching unit(110) outputs a high or low level system-on signal by responding to the voltage level received from the battery voltage detector. A logic circuit unit(130) outputs a system booting signal or a power cut-off signal to a CPU(140) depending on an output level of the switching unit. The battery voltage detector includes a distributing resistor distributing battery voltage according to a predetermined ratio, and a voltage detector IC outputting the high or low level signal depending on the voltage level applied to the distributing resistor. The switching unit includes a power button, and a transistor outputting the high or low level system-on signal depending on the output voltage level of the battery voltage detector when the power button is turned on/off. |
