The relative health of data storage drives may be determined based, at least in some aspects, on data access information and/or other drive operation information. In some examples, upon receiving the operation information from a computing device, a health level of a drive may be determined. The health level determination may be based at least in part on operating information received from a client entity. Additionally, a storage space allocation instruction or operation may be determined for execution. The allocation instruction or operation determined to be performed may be based at least in part on the determined health level.

1. A computer-implemented method for data storage management, comprising:
under control of one or more computer systems configured with executable instructions, receiving an operating indicator associated with a data storage device of the one or more computer systems, the operating indicator indicating a level of ability to perform data operations on data stored in the data storage device, the level of ability from a plurality of possible ability levels including at least a middle ability level between at least a first ability level and a second ability level; determining, based at least in part on the operating indicator, a capability level of the data storage device, the determined capability level from a plurality of possible capability levels, at least one of the plurality of possible capability levels including an intermediate capability between at least a first capability level and a second capability level; and when it is determined that the capability level of the data storage device is within the intermediate capability level:
maintaining the data stored in the data storage device;causing one or more actions to be performed that disable reading or writing to a remaining storage space of the data storage device such that no additional data can be read from or written to the data storage device; andassociating the data storage device within the intermediate capability level in a data store to enable an administrative computer system of the one or more computer systems to utilize the data storage device for one or more purposes determined to be appropriate, for the intermediate capability level, by the administrative computer system.
