Class 38(5) A switch for regulating a transformer or resistance has fixed contacts, e.g. 1, 2, 3 co-operating with movable contacts 5, 6, in such a way that whilst one contact, e.g. 5, is in engagement with one fixed contact, the other, 6, is moved past the first and engaged with the next fixed contact, the contact 5 then being raised rapidly from its fixed contact and moved past the contact 6 and engaged with the next contact, and so on. The contacts 5, 6 are arranged in recesses 63, 75 in members 58, 72 slidable in a two-part housing 25, 26 arranged on guide-rails 34, 41. The housing 25, 26 has a central recess 43 receiving a driving shaft 17 having eccentric pins 21, 23 carrying eccentrics 22, 24 and passing through slots 8, 13 in the contacts 5, 6, which are urged down by springs 16. Freely mounted on the shaft 17 is a U-shaped ring 46 in which is mounted a spiral spring 47, the outer end of which is fixed to the ring and the inner end of which is fixed to a ring 51 fixed on the shaft 17. The ring 46 carries a gear wheel 48 engaging a chain 50, the ring 51 having two recesses staggered by 180 degrees and engageable in turn by a pin 53 so that as the gear is turned, the spring is stressed, due to locking of ring 51, until the pin 53 is raised by one of two cams on the ring 46, the shaft 17 now being rotated rapidly through 180 degrees by the spring. Rotation of the eccentrics 22, 24 causes them to engage and lift in turn, pins 9, 14 screwed into the contacts 5, 6, these pins also serving to connect conductors 71, 79 to the contacts, the other ends of the conductors being connected to the rail 37. At the same time, there is a sliding movement of the members 58, 72 relatively to the housing so that the fixed contacts are successively engaged. |
