<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vertical axis windmill variable of a blade area and suited for use on a ship. <P>SOLUTION: A curtain type vertical sail which is one of sail types for sailing ships is adopted for a blade type of the windmill. The area is increased or decreased by rotation of a belt. A part based on a swash plate used for controlling a main rotor of a helicopter is used for power transmission between the belt of a rotary part of the windmill and a belt of a mast part. Crosstrees used in a mast of a sail ship are adopted for reinforcement of the mast.
