Snapshot content metadata for application consistent backups

At least one of configuration information of a storage volume stored on a storage system and characteristics of a snapshot, including characteristics of one or more files stored in the snapshot, are identified. Snapshot content metadata, comprising the at least one of the identified characteristics and the configuration information, is created. The snapshot content metadata is associated with the snapshot.

a storage device; and a host computer coupled to the storage device and configured to:
identify at least one of configuration information of a storage volume stored on the storage device and characteristics of the snapshot, including characteristics of one or more files stored in the snapshot,
wherein the configuration information includes a file system of the storage volume when the snapshot was created, an operating system executing on the storage system, a software application that created one or more files, a hardware configuration of the storage system, and consistency group information for the storage volume and any related additional storage volumes,create snapshot content metadata comprising the at least one of the identified characteristics and the configuration information,associate the snapshot content metadata with the snapshot, andstore the snapshot content metadata.
