A motor vehicle control system controls a plurality of vehicle subsystems (12 see fig 2) to operate in a plurality of subsystem control modes in dependence on a driving surface. The system is operable in a condition in which it automatically determines the driving surface and causes each of the subsystems to operate in a predetermined one of the control modes in dependence on the determined driving surface. When an interruption in powertrain torque occurs, the automatic changing is suspended. This may occur when a clutch (123 see fig 1) is activated for a gear change, when neither a forward nor reverse gear is selected or when transitioning from a low range to a high range mode. The invention prevents inappropriate mode changes. The subsystems (12) controlled by a vehicle control unit (10 see fig 2) may include an engine management system, a transmission system, a steering system, a brakes system and a suspension system. |
