Synthetic resins are plasticized by incorporating a nitration product of polycyclic hydrocarbons obtained by selective extraction of petroleum with furfurol. The resins may be polymers of vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloroacetate, vinyl alkyl ethers, vinyl alkyl ketones, vinyl alkyl thio-ethers, vinyl acetylene, divinyl acetylene, acrylic acid esters, methacrylic acid esters, styrene and isobutylene. In an example, 60 parts of polyvinyl chloride are mixed with 40 parts of a product obtained by nitrating at 90 DEG C. petroleum extracted with furfurol, and the mixture treated on rolls at 160 DEG C.ALSO:Chlorinated rubber or natural resin is plasticized by incorporating a nitration product of polycyclic hydrocarbons obtained by selective extraction of petroleum with furfurol. Preferably the product is obtained by extracting petroleum with furfurol, reacting with 98 per cent. nitric acid at 90 DEG C. and then heating to 140 DEG C. until foaming ceases. |
