The present invention relates to a display device and a driving method thereof, which comprise a conversion unit for extracting luminance information from an original video signal; a video analyzing unit for calculating a luminance distribution ratio corresponding to the original video signal by analyzing the luminance information; a contrast ratio determination unit for determining a contrast ratio by a plurality of gray levels depending on the luminance distribution ratio; a contrast ratio control unit for compensating the contrast of the original video signal according to the contrast ratio and generating the compensated video signal; and a brightness control unit for adjusting and outputting the brightness of the compensated video signal in response to a control signal for a user. |
