1. A chemiluminescent acridinium compound having the following structure, wherein said acridinium compound exhibits reduced non-specific binding to a solid phase as compared to an otherwise identical acridinium compound not comprising said zwitterionic functional group: wherein: R1 is a C1-35 alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl or aralkyl group, each of which may contain up to 20 heteroatoms, or a sulfopropyl or sulfobutyl group, or R1 is a group —Ra—Z; R2 and R3 are independently selected from (i) hydrogen, (ii) an electron donating group, or (iii) a group —Z; Z is a zwitterionic group of the form: wherein:X is independently selected at each occurrence from a bond, —CH2—, oxygen, sulfur, —NRN—, amide (—NRN(CO)—), carbamate (—NRNC(O)O—), or urea (—NRNC(O)NRN—);R′ and R″ are independently selected at each occurrence from C1-35 alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, or aralkyl, each optionally containing up to 20 heteroatoms;Z1 is a group —Ra—Z2 where Z2 is selected from carboxylate (—COO−), sulfonate (—SO3−), sulfate (—OSO3−), phosphate (—OP(O)(OR)(O−)), or oxide (—O−); or, in the case where Z2 is an oxide (—O−), Ra may be absent; andn is, independently selected at each occurrence, an integer between one and 12; R4 and R8 are the same or different and are selected from hydrogen, C1-35 alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, alkoxyl (—OR), alkylthiol (—SR), or substituted amino groups (—NR2); Ra is a divalent radical selected from C1-35 alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, or aralkyl group, each optionally containing up to 20 heteroatoms; RN is independently selected at each occurrence from hydrogen, C1-35 alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, or aralkyl groups each containing up to 20 heteroatoms; R is independently selected at each occurrence from C1-35 alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, or aralkyl groups each containing up to 20 heteroatoms; R* is selected from hydrogen, C1-35 alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, or aralkyl, each optionally containing up to 20 heteroatoms, or R* is a group —Ra-L, wherein L is a leaving group for forming a conjugate with an analyte, analyte analog, or binding partner for an analyte; and n′, m′, and q′ are each independently an integer from 1-4. |
