PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a whitening agent containing steviol as an active ingredient and a method for manufacturing steviol.SOLUTION: Steviol is excellent in a melanogenesis inhibitory effect, and can be used as a whitening agent for whitening. Steviol can be manufactured efficiently by lactic acid producing bacteria fermentation of a stevia plant or a stevia plant extract to prepare a stevia lactic acid producing bacteria fermentation product, and by collection of steviol from the stevia lactic acid producing bacteria fermentation product.
