A computer system includes a processor and memory and is configured to receive the scan data to generate a digital model of the tissue sample. A computer program is stored in the memory and is configured to compute an optimized cutting plan for the tissue sample. The cutting plan is based on criteria input to the program to determine a best combination of primitives to fit within a volume of the tissue sample. A cutting device is configured to receive the tissue sample and cut the tissue sample in accordance with the cutting plan. Various methods are also disclosed.
