<p>Pure alkyl methacrylate is obtained from scrap alkyl methacrylate polymer by heating it above the decomposition temperature, which depolymerizes it, condensing the vapours and treating the condensate with chlorine and distilling the chlorinated product. The depolymerized material is preferably steam distilled both before and after the chlorination and the final product vacuum distilled. Tables are given in the Specification to illustrate the effect of various combinations of the steps outlined above on the purity of the product.
