<p>An apparatus for drying particulate materials comprises a dryer with a heating device 20, a drying chamber 7 having a closable opening through which particulate material can be loaded into the drying chamber, and a gas outlet. An extractor fan 30 may provided for moving a stream of heated gas from the heating device through the drying chamber and out through the gas outlet, to dry and heat the particulate material. A gas processing system is included downstream of the gas outlet of the drying chamber for removing particulate matter from the stream of heated gas prior to venting it to atmosphere, the gas processing system defining a primary gas flow path from the gas outlet of the drying chamber to an exhaust vent 32. The gas processing system comprises a filtering device 27 for separating gas-entrained particulate matter from the heated gas, a diverter device 33, 34 located between the filtering device and the exhaust vent. The diverter device is controllable to allow heated gas to discharge through the exhaust vent or to divert all or a portion of the heated gas along a secondary gas flow path back into the drying chamber through or past the heating device.</p> |
