Aqueous dispersions of carbon black contain as dispersing agent a water-soluble salt of a copolymer of maleic anhydride and an olefinically unsaturated hydrocarbon having 5-10 carbon atoms. The molecular weight of the copolymer should be below 5000, and preferably 750-5000, and the viscosity of a 35 per cent solution of the copolymer in an inert organic solvent (e.g. dioxane or methyl ethyl ketone) should be below 1000 centiposes at 25 DEG C. Unsaturated hydrocarbons used in forming the copolymer may be 1-amylene, isoamylene, 1-hexene, diisobutylene, 1-dodecene, styrene, a -methyl styrene, vinyl toluene, isopropenyl toluene, indene, dicyclopentadiene, and terpenes, e.g. b -pinene and limonene. The salt is prepared by treating the copolymer with alkali metal hydroxide, carbonate, or bicarbonate, or ammonium hydroxide. The amount used in the dispersion is 0.5-4 per cent by weight of the carbon black. Dispersions of gas black, furnace black, lamp black, and acetylene black are formed and have pHs of 7-12. Fluid pastes may be prepared containing up to 50 per cent solids.ALSO:Aqueous dispersions of carbon black contain as dispersing agent a water-soluble salt of a copolymer of maleic anhydride and an olefinically unsaturated hydrocarbon having 5-10 carbon atoms.
