摘要 774,673. Annealing glass. SOC. ANON. DES MANUFACTURES DES GLACES ET PRODUITS CHIMIQUES DE ST.- GOBAIN, CHAUNY & CIREY. April 18, 1952 [April 21, 1951], No. 9860/52. Class 56 A process for improving the mechanical properties of glass, especially that of being easily cut without breakage, consists in modifying the magnitude and distribution of the permanent stresses in the glass by causing in the superficial layers slipping effects in a sense opposite to those which have occurred at the commencement of cooling when the glass molecules were capable of moving relatively to one another. As applied to the treatment of drawn sheet glass the process consists in bringing the glass to about 420‹C. and exposing it to an intense heat flux produced by a gas burner or by other means such as radiation or dielectric loss heating for about one and a half seconds, the flux being of the order of 20 calories per sq.cm. per second and being sufficiently intense to generate expansion stresses in the external layers of the glass and to cause slipping of these layers with respect to the more rigid internal layers. Thus a glass sheet. having a normal stress distribution as indicated in Fig. 1 -wherein tension ordinates are shown below and compression ordinates above the zero stress axis X-X<SP>1</SP> has a stress distribution after treatment as shown in Fig. 2, this attentuated stress distribution being the same as that produced by the conventional annealing treatment.
